Coker

Oliver Patrick and Mike Hewitson

Oliver Patrick and Mike Hewitson are standing to be the Somerset Councillors for Coker. They are both committed local campaigners with a record of hard work and action. They've attracted over £200,000 in grant funding for local projects, and delivered for businesses and residents throughout the Coronavirus pandemic. They are the only candidates that can beat the Conservatives and stop further Conservative cuts across Somerset.

Mike is a community pharmacist employing more than 20 people locally, and previously served on the National Pharmacy Association’s board. Mike has been working exceptionally hard since October setting up and running a local vaccination clinic in Beaminster that has vaccinated 14,000 people. He has been a District Councillor since 2019, and has championed community projects such as the Hamdon Youth and Family Centre in Stoke, Hamdon Community Arts Project as well as support for our village halls and public spaces, including a £130,000 adventure playpark. Mike has helped to lead the way on declaring a climate and ecological emergency and has helped to prevent inappropriate and unsustainable development. Mike lives with his wife, a Deputy Headteacher and two daughters in Norton.

Oliver is a teacher by profession and has taught in London, Cardiff, and overseas. He settled in South Somerset in 2012 and is now a local school governor and a District Councillor. He lives in West Chinnock with his wife, who is a GP, and their two children. Oliver cares deeply about community and public service. When Coronavirus lockdown was announced in 2020, he founded a Covid-19 support group with the help of 3 neighbours. Together, they coordinated a team of 60 volunteers that delivered hundreds and hundreds of prescriptions and supplies to isolating residents.

Oliver is greatly concerned about the environment. Since being elected he has tabled successful council motions on climate change and river pollution in Somerset, helped plant 100s of trees, and campaigned to clean up our local rivers.

The Lib Dem plan for our area

Protect local services

In the face of irresponsible Conservative Government and County Council cuts to our funding, Liberal Democrats have prevented cuts to vital local services.

Improve our environment

The Liberal Democrats are actively improving our environment. We're investing in local parks, improving recycling rates, planting thousands of trees, and leading the way in renewable energy.

Invest in our communities

Oliver and Mike have delivered funding for a variety of local amenities including playing fields, village halls, and local sports facilities like those at North Perrott Cricket Club. Lib Dem District Councils are also investing millions in Town Centres across South Somerset.
